We've all experienced a cavity.  Ever since the emergence of our very first baby teeth, they have been a concern for our parents and for us as we've grown older.  The process can start very silently, or it can be the initial reason you visit the dentist in pain.

deterioration of the exterior hard surface of the tooth, called the enamel is where a tooth starts to decay.  When it begins its attack on a healthy tooth, the symptoms can be relatively mild or simply a light sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet things.

Prevention is not always an easy proposition and depends greatly upon the natural substance and strength of your teeth.  People with weaker or softer tooth enamel will find they may experience the problem earlier and sooner than some of their friends.

Advantages to Seeing the Best Sedation Dentist

Posted by Dr. Mark Mann

Apr 27, 2013 9:35:00 AM

There are many reasons, as a patient, that you may want to go to a sedation dentist for you next appointment. Whether you are nervous, stressed, and afraid; have an allergic reaction and difficulty receiving other anesthetic treatments; or require a major surgery, Dr. Mark Mann is Sugar Land's finest. With his gentle and professional care, you will have the smile of a lifetime! There are plenty of advantages to seeing a particular dentist, but these 3 top the list.

Stress Free Dental Care

Do you have a high level of anxiety or fear when going to the dentist? No need to worry! Going to a professional sedation dentist with provide you with a stress free and affordable environment to get your teeth in tip top shape. If you've had a bad experience at the dentist before, sedation will help you calm your nerves and keep you stress free. Better for you and the dentist! If the traditional anesthetic treatment keeps you away from the dreaded dentist chair, the next advantage will give a sense of comfort.

Anesthetics Causing Agony? Try Dental Sedation

If the usual anesthetic medication causes problems such as having an allergic reaction or if you aren't a fan of needles, sedation is the way to go. Needles can be painful and cause a lot of discomfort. The sedation techniques used will cause little to no pain at all. It can be either administered through an IV or orally, so there are no painful shots in your mouth. An IV is done before the procedure and it's a lot less painful than a needle in your mouth. If you want to take the sedation orally, typically one or two pills are taken before the visit. Although, one thing to keep in mind, you will need a friend to drive you home.

A Sedation Dentist Takes the Worry Out of Surgery.

Do you have a dental problem that will require surgery? Scared, fear, pain, worry are a few things probably running through your mind. Setting up an appointment with Dr. Mann will help ease those concerns, so there is nothing to worry about. Sedation will make your fears wash away. In fact, you may not even remember the procedure at all. Talk about maximum comfort and relaxation! What better option is there?

Another reason many people choose sedation over the traditional treatment is to help save time. Patients are more likely to be cooperative when they are not under stress, resulting in fewer patients having to come back for multiple appointments. It's a lot easier if the dentist has minimal movements to distract of slow them down from working. If you have issues with a gag reflex, using the sedation method will also help keep that under control. So if you want to only have to visit every once in a while and not a few times a week, this is an option for you! With these advantages of a sedation dentist in mind, what are you waiting for?

10 Simple Steps to the Bright, White Smile You've Always Wanted

Posted by Dr. Mark Mann

Apr 9, 2013 9:24:00 AM

But in today's fast-paced, highly caffeinated world, getting one is easier said than done. But with a little effort, you can get that smile you've always wanted.

Here are 10 tips to help you achieve whiter teeth:

Brush 'em

This is the oldest trick in the book. But you'd be surprised how many people don't brush at all, much less  two times a day. But they should if they want to keep their smile bright and white.

Brushing for two minutes twice a day not only removes cavity-causing plaque from your teeth and keeps your gums healthy and strong, but it also washes away staining agents found in everything from blueberries to tobacco. So brush 'em up.

Use whitening toothpaste

Of course if you're going to spend four minutes a day brushing, why not maximize your efforts by using whitening toothpaste. Most include a touch of hydrogen peroxide, which whitens teeth. Learn more about whitening toothpaste.

Steer clear of the cola and coffee

Soft drinks and coffee are great for getting you going in the morning, but they're terrible for white teeth. Over time, both dark drinks will eventually stain your teeth, staining your white teeth.

Don't sip it

Okay, maybe giving up dark, caffeinated soda and coffee is unrealistic--everyone needs a little extra energy boost now and then. So if you're going to start your day with something from Starbucks, why not suck it down through a straw?

Using a straw helps ensure that at least some of the staining agents in soda and coffee bypass your pearly whites. It's not a perfect solution, but it will help a little in your effort to get that bright white smile you've always wanted.

Eat your vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and cucumbers. Thanks to your Mom, you've always known they're good for your body. But did you know they're also good for your teeth? Well they are. At the same time crunchy vegetables are delivering essential vitamins and minerals to your body, they're wiping away decay and staining agents from your teeth. So eat them. Your Mom (and your dentist) want you to.

Toss the tobacco

There are more reasons than we can possibly list to stop smoking or chewing tobacco. Near the top, of course, is that tossing the tobacco will help keep you keep or get a brighter, whiter smile. Nicotine, which is found in all tobacco products you put in your mouth, leaves a gross yellow film on your teeth. Over time, it will make your teeth yellow.

Swish

Mouth wash: It's not just for fresh breath anymore. A lot of the mouth wash on the market today includes whitening agents. It can help wipe your away staining agents and actually actively work to whiten your teeth. See what whitening mouth wash is out there.

Strip 'em

Nearly every drug store and many dentists sell teeth-whitening strips. If you're interested in aggressively whitening your teeth, strips are the second most effective method you can try. Read about whitening strips.

See your dentist

The most effective way to get the white smile you've always wanted is to bleach them under the supervision of your dentist. Not only does dentist-supervised bleaching offer the best way deliver the highest concentration of bleaching agents to your teeth, but it includes a customized teeth tray that fits snugly in your mouth, ensuring that every tooth gets a full amount of treatment.

Want that perfect smile? Try these tips or, better yet, talk to your dentist about what you can do to get a bright, white smile.
